We had this smoothie at a juice place over the weekend, and though it tasted amazing, I could tell there was a bunch of artificial sweetener in it.
The menu |
After determining it was likely from the protein powder, I asked them what kind of protein powder they use.
Sure enough, it was sweetened with erythritol and stevia.
She said they used vanilla, instead of chocolate |
Artificial sweeteners give me restless legs (and nausea), so Hubs and I decided to make a version of our own.
It's actually not easy to find protein powder that doesn't have artificial sweetener in it, but we finally did!*
This one just has whey and vanilla.
Ingredients:
1 scoop protein powder (like "Whey Factors" French Vanilla Flavor).******(Scratch that. They hid stevia in an unexpected spot on their label.) See substitution. ⬇️- Substitution: 1 tbsp vanilla extract and 1/2 cup homemade cottage cheese
- 1 cup almond milk
- 2 cups crushed ice
- 2 bananas (very ripe)
- 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt or kefir
- 2/3 cup cacao nibs
